The African Union formally took its seat as a new member of the G20 Saturday at the invitation of summit host and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director and Chairman Kristalina Georgieva and World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala were among the first to arrive.
Earlier on Friday, the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration of G20 is almost ready and will be presented before the grouping’s leaders to secure a consensus, India’s sherpa Amitabh Kant said.
Addressing a press conference ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit on 9-10 September, Kant said he would reveal more about the declaration, also referred to as a joint communique, after it has been accepted by the leaders. However, he said the declaration will include the voice of the global south and developing countries.
Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina held a bilateral talk in New Delhi. The two countries also signed three memorandum of understanding (MoUs), including one on cooperation in Digital Payment mechanisms.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden arrived in the national capital Delhi on Friday to participate in the G20 Summit to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. US President Biden, along with Janet Yellen, went for a closed-door meeting with PM Modi on Friday, after the former arrived in India.
The Quad, comprising India, US, Japan and Australia, has been focusing on practical cooperation to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific in the backdrop of China’s increasing military muscle-flexing in the region.
The 18th G20 Summit is being held at the state-of-the-art Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre in New Delhi on September 9 and 10.
A Leaders Declaration will be adopted at the conclusion of the New Delhi Summit.

As India hosts the G20 Summit, security has been beefed up in the national capital.
Speaking about the security arrangements, Delhi Police Special Commissioner, Law and Order, Dependra Pathak, said that the situation is under control.
“There is a strategic and sufficient deployment (of police). The situation is peaceful and under control. We will continue to maintain this,” he said while addressing the media.
Earlier, while speaking to ANI Special CP, Law & Order, Dependra Pathak, said the Delhi Police is alert and all its personnel are on the ground. (ANI)

Hours after the African Union joined the G20 on Saturday, a senior delegate from South Africa said the voice of the continent and the Global South will “grow stronger” globally after the AU’s inclusion.
Speaking to PTI, the delegate who is in New Delhi currently for the G20 Summit, said that South Africa always expected that AU’s inclusion will happen.
“We are very happy, especially considering that South Africa has always supported the inclusion of AU in the G20, which would give our continent a voice on a bigger platform globally, not only for the African continent but the Global South [as well],” she told PTI, on the condition of anonymity. The European Commission president asked G20 leaders on Saturday to join a proposal to set up global carbon pricing.
Many countries are using a price on carbon to help meet their climate goals in the form of a tax or under an emissions trading (ETS), or cap-and-trade, system.
“Climate change is man-made. So it means we can address it. For this we need innovation, investments in green technologies, renewable energy capacity and energy efficiency … At the G20 I invited leaders to join the call for global carbon pricing,” Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X social media, (formerly Twitter). Major G20 partners will unveil ambitious plans Saturday to bolster trade between India, the Middle East and Europe, a modern-day Spice Route to bind regions that account for about a third of the global economy.

Amid the heightened security in the national capital for the G20 Summit, a case of drone flying in the Patel Nagar area of central Delhi came to the fore on Friday.
After receiving information, the police registered an FIR and upon further investigation, it was found that a birthday party was being celebrated in the Patel Nagar area, and the drone was flown by photographers to cover the video of the event.
The police have registered a case under IPC 188 for disobedience to orders duly promulgated by public servants. Notably, Delhi Police is on high alert, and any kind of disobedience of the law by citizens is expected to be addressed with strict actions. (ANI)

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and World Health Organisation (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus arrived here on Saturday morning to attend the two-day G20 Summit.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was received by Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
A host of other leaders, including US President Joe Biden, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, arrived on Friday for the summit that will be held over the weekend. (PTI)

The highly anticipated historic G20 Leader’s Summit begins today, September 9, in the country’s capital city. The world leaders who have arrived in Delhi have gathered at the Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition and Convention Centre.
The first session of the G20 Summit would begin at around 10:30 am under this year’s theme ‘One Earth’. This global meeting, a culmination of various ministries, meetings and the engagement of different groups that happened throughout the year, aims to address key issues around the globe.

The world’s 20 major countries formed an economic grouping after the Asian financial crisis in 1999 on the understanding that crises spilling across borders needed better international economic co-operation to tackle them, Reuters reported.
The bloc accounts for 80% of global gross domestic product (GDP) and 75% of international trade.
It includes Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
Although only treasury chiefs met in initial years, the heads of all member nations decided to meet once a year for a summit after the 2008 financial crisis.

India’s year-long presidency has seen discussions centre on issues such as more loans to developing nations by multilateral institutions, reform of international debt architecture, regulations on cryptocurrency and the impact of geopolitics on food and energy security.
The bloc has failed to issue any joint statements this year, as it is deeply divided over language referring to the war in Ukraine.
While Russia and China oppose blaming Moscow for the war, Western countries, such as Canada, France and the United States, have sought a strong condemnation as a necessary condition for a joint statement.

An agreement to explore building a major railway and port project to connect the Middle East with India and Europe will be signed at the G20, US officials said Saturday.
As reported by AFP, Jon Finer, US Deputy National Security Advisor, said a memorandum of understanding would be inked to “explore a shipping and rail transportation that will enable the flow of commerce, energy and data from here in India across the Middle East to Europe”. (AFP)
Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud who is on a State visit to India till September 11 will attend the G20 Summit being hosted under India’s Presidency on September 9-10, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Saturday.
India is hosting the two-day-long G20 Leader’s Summit in the national capital at the newly inaugurated Bharat Mandapam starting today. The Summit would commence with the arrival of the world leaders at the venue (Bharat Mandapam) from 9:30 am onwards. The theme of this year’s G20 Summit, which is taking place under India’s presidency is “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “One Earth · One Family · One Future”. (ANI)
The New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration of G20 is almost ready and will be presented before the grouping’s leaders to secure a consensus, India’s sherpa Amitabh Kant said.
Addressing a press conference ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit on 9-10 September, Kant said he would reveal more about the declaration, also referred to as a joint communique, after it has been accepted by the leaders. However, he said the declaration will include the voice of the global south and developing countries.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in New Delhi today to attend the two-day-long G20 Summit which is being held under India’s Presidency.
He was received by Union Minister of State for MSME, Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma at the airport.
A group of dancers also presented a traditional dance to welcome the German chancellor.
In May this year Prime Minister Narendra Modi had met the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and reviewed the progress in bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional developments and global challenges.
The two leaders met on the sidelines of the 49th summit of the Group of Seven (G7) in the Japanese city of Hiroshima in May recently. (ANI)
