6.8 magnitude earthquake
In the southwest part of Marrakesh, Morocco, the earth shook due to strong tremors late on Friday (September 8). The intensity of the earthquake was 6.8, due to which there was huge damage. News agency AP has told that 296 people have died so far. Morocco’s Interior Ministry has confirmed this.
The US Geological Survey was told that the tremors of the earthquake were felt at around 11:11 pm. The epicenter of this earthquake was 71 km away from Marrakesh at a depth of 18.5 km.
Houses turned into debris
News agency Reuters reported that some houses have collapsed in the old city of Marrakesh and people are working to remove debris by hand. Waiting for the arrival of heavy machines for rescue.
The crowd of people is increasing in the hospitals of Marrakesh. The quake was also felt in the coastal cities of Rabat, Casablanca and Essaouira. Internet has also been affected in Marrakesh due to power cut after the earthquake.
There was a big earthquake in 2004
At least 628 people were killed and 926 injured in the 2004 earthquake that hit Al Hoceimah in northeastern Morocco, the AP reported. Earlier in 1980, there was a powerful earthquake of 7.3 magnitude in Algeria, neighboring Morocco. 2500 people were killed in this and about 3 lakh people were rendered homeless.
